Human Resource Management and Revision
This course will: review the major elements of HSC Topic 4 – Employment Relations by highlighting the nature of effective employment relations and their importance to business operation and society. Existing case study information will be used to reflect this HSC topic. This course will then concentrate on an extensive period on improving exam technique in the Multiple Choice, Short Answers, Business Report and & Extended Responses using case studies through the HSC Business Studies Topics 1, 2, 3, & 4.
This course is part of a three-part series covering key areas from within this subject’s syllabus. Other courses include and HSC Business Studies Preparation Course (Part 1) and HSC Business Studies Preparation (Part 2). You do not need to attend all three parts in order to benefit. The series is supplemented by the HSC Business Studies Exam Preparation Course to prepare for end of year exams.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- discuss the influence of government on the process of determining employment contracts
- explain how businesses exhibit corporate social responsibility in the management of human resources
- analyse the causes of two workplace disputes and the strategies used to resolve them
- examine the advantages of a diverse, culturally competent workforce for a global business
- explain the interdependence between human resources and other key business functions
- compare the process of negotiating enterprise/collective agreements with the negotiation of individual contracts
- discuss the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing in the global market
- evaluate the effectiveness of human resource management for one business and recommend appropriate alternative strategies.
Content
- H1 The role of business in Australia and globally with regards to: the advantages of a diverse, culturally competent workforce for a global business.
- H2 Management strategies in response to changes in internal and external influences with regards to: the causes of two workplace disputes and the strategies used to resolve them.
- H3 Social and ethical responsibilities of management with regards to: how businesses exhibit corporate social responsibility in the management of human resources.
- H4 Business functions and processes in large and global businesses with regards to: the process of negotiating enterprise/collective agreements with the negotiation of individual contracts.
- H5 Management strategies and their impact on businesses with regards to: the effectiveness of human resource management for one business and appropriate alternative strategies.
- H6 Effectiveness of management in the performance of businesses with regards to: the effectiveness of human resource management for one business and recommend appropriate alternative strategies.
- H7 Contemporary business issues with regards to: the influence of government on the process of determining employment contracts.
- H8 Information for actual and hypothetical business situations with regards to: the interdependence between human resources and other key business functions.
- H9 Business information, issues and concepts with regards to: the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing in the global market.

Delivery style
In order to cater for students’ different styles, this course will have a blend of lecturer instruction via PowerPoint, short answer practice, multiple choice analysis, essay planning, sample HSC question practice and feedback, extended discussion of issues and implications, and analysis of past student responses. Lessons will incorporate both group and individual student participation.
