Marketing Strategies and Financial Management

The course will concentrate on improving examination technique in the Short Answer & Business Report sections through the HSC Business Studies Topics 1, 2 & 3. This course will then cover the main elements involved in the development and implementation of successful marketing strategies - HSC Topic 2 – Marketing. For HSC Topic 3 – Finance the focus is to develop an understanding of the role of financial planning within business operation and management. Existing case studies will be used to interpret the published annual reports. Students will then develop skills to interpret financial information and analyse the financial statements, undertake comparative ratio analysis — with similar businesses, against common standards (HSC Topic 3 – Finance). Existing case studies will be used to analyse the financial statements, undertake comparative ratio analysis and evaluate marketing strategies for a product or service.

This course is part of a three-part series covering key areas from within this subject’s syllabus. Other courses include HSC Business Studies Preparation (Part 1) and HSC Business Studies Preparation (Part 3). You do not need to attend all three parts in order to benefit. The series is supplemented by the HSC Business Studies Exam Preparation Course to prepare for end of year exams.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • assess why a mix of promotional strategies is important in the marketing of goods and services
  • evaluate the marketing strategies for a good or service
  • analyse a marketing plan for a business
  • explain how globalisation has affected marketing management
  • explain potential conflicts between short-term and long-term financial objectives
  • analyse the influence of government and the global market on financial management
  • identify the limitations of financial reporting
  • compare the risks involved in domestic and global financial transactions
  • calculate key financial ratios
  • assess business performance using comparative ratio analysis
  • recommend strategies to improve financial performance
  • examine ethical financial reporting practices.

Content

  • H1 The role of business in Australia and globally with regards to: how globalisation has affected marketing management.
  • H2 Management strategies in response to changes in internal and external influences with regards to: the marketing strategies for a product or service; strategies to improve financial performance.
  • H3 Social and ethical responsibilities of management with regards to: ethical financial reporting practices.
  • H4 Business functions and processes in large and global businesses in regards to: the influence of government and the global market on financial management.
  • H5 Management strategies and their impact on businesses with regards to: why a mix of promotional strategies is important in the marketing of goods and services.
  • H6 Effectiveness of management in the performance of businesses with regards to: potential conflicts between short-term and long-term financial objectives.
  • H7 Contemporary business issues with regards to: the limitations of financial reporting.
  • H8 Information for actual and hypothetical business situations with regards to: a marketing plan for a business.
  • H9 Business information, issues and concepts with regards to: the risks involved in domestic and global financial transactions.
  • H10 Mathematical concepts in business situations with regards to: calculating key financial ratios; assessing business performance using comparative ratio analysis.

Delivery style

In order to cater for students’ different styles, this course will have a blend of lecturer instruction via PowerPoint, short answer practice, multiple choice analysis, essay planning, sample HSC question practice and feedback, extended discussion of issues and implications, and analysis of past student responses. Lessons will incorporate both group and individual student participation.
