In 2009 Patricia O’Brien (PhD) returned to Australia from Trinity College Dublin to take up the position of Chair in Disability Studies and Director, Centre for Disability Studies, University of Sydney. At Trinity College Patricia was the Foundation Director, National Institute for Intellectual Disability where her work supported a mission of Inclusion through Education, Research and Advocacy. She attracted several research and development grants that focused on inclusive research where people with disabilities and family members were involved in developing and participating in research that they had ownership over. Prior to Ireland Patricia worked at the University of Auckland where she taught both graduate and post graduate courses relevant for professionals working in the area of human services and special education. Patricia has co-edited two texts that promote disability services as value driven and person centred organisations. Patricia’s teaching and research interests cover advocacy, deinstitutionalisation, community participation, transition, inclusion, as well as the interface between offenders with intellectual disabilities and the criminal justice system. Her interest in community participation arose from leading a team in New Zealand to relocate people with intellectual disabilities from institutional settings to community based residences. Two major projects that she has recently been involved in Ireland have respectively seen young people with intellectual disabilities gaining further education within university settings as well as people with intellectual disabilities becoming co-researchers within a National Survey of Peoples' Needs.John O'Byrne

John O’Byrne is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Academic Programs in Physics at the University of Sydney. He has worked in Australia and the US exploring his interests in how to achieve high resolution using ground-based optical telescopes, most recently in the emerging field of Astrophotonics. He is also the Secretary of the Astronomical Society of Australia, the society of professional astronomers in Australia.Anita O'Connell

Anita O’Connell has a B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of New South Wales and a Ph.D. from the University of Sydney, specialising in molecular biology and biochemical genetics. This was followed by research positions at the University of California Irvine, Rockefeller University in New York City, and the Heart Research Institute in Sydney. For the next several years she concentrated on looking after her two young children, while living in several different countries and working part-time in administrative roles outside of science. After returning to Australia, she resumed working in biological science, and also developed a new interest in high school science education, completing a Graduate Diploma of Education in 2005. She has continued teaching science in schools and universities, and has developed in-depth high school biology courses. She is a member of the ANZFSS, the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.Erin O'Dwyer

Dr Erin O’Dwyer is an experienced communications leader and educator.
In more than 25 years as a journalist, Erin has worked across print, digital, broadcast and publishing media. Her writing has appeared in publications as diverse as The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Good Weekend, The Saturday Paper, The Guardian, Australian Geographic, Marie Claire and Vogue. She has been a producer for the ABC, an editor for SBS, and her audio documentaries have been broadcast on ABC’s Radio National. She has been recognised three times in the Australian UN Media Peace Awards for her social issues journalism, and she is a Walkley Awards finalist.
Erin has held senior management roles and led teams including at the ABC and in corporate and non-profit settings. Her broad strategic and tactical experience includes corporate communications, crisis communications, social media management, policy, partnerships, governance, government relations and community engagement.
A small business owner, Erin leads a small team at her communications consultancy. Her team are story consultants, media and communications strategists, and writing and editing specialists. Their specialty is helping brands and businesses tell their stories.Â
Erin is a passionate mentor and teacher, and has two decades’ experience lecturing in journalism, narrative non-fiction and media law at universities including the University of Sydney, UTS, UNSW and QUT. Erin holds a PhD (UTS), and a BA in Media Studies (UQ). She is also a qualified lawyer, with an LLB (Hons) and a GDLP (ANU). She is admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of NSW. She has served on a number of non-profit Boards.
Erin believes teaching and mentoring is one of the best ways of learning.
