Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Korean is spoken by over 75 million people worldwide. Although spoken mostly in North and South Korea, Australia and several other countries have large Korean populations who speak the language.

This introductory course introduces learners to simple vocabulary, greetings and numbering, the alphabet 'Han-Geul', and also provides an insight to Korean culture. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • exchange basic greetings
  • briefly introduce yourself
  • ask and answer simple questions about the name of things
  • recognise the Korean alphabet, Han-Geul, including vowels and consonants
  • talk about numbers relating to contact numbers, date of birth and pricing
  • describe places where you are going.

Content

  • A brief introduction of Han-Geul (the Korean alphabet)
  • Greetings and meeting people
  • Korean alphabet writing system and pronunciation
  • Asking the name of things, eg 'What is this? It is a bag'
  • Talking about the location of a person and a building
  • Telling the time, dates, days and months
  • Numbers – Sino numbers and pure numbers

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Based on Pre-chapters 1-4 and Chapters 1-2 of the above texts. These texts are used for activities and form the basis for consolidation and practice.
