HSC Mathematics - Extension 1 Exam Preparation Course (September)

Course Information

HSC Mathematics. The smart way to prepare for your HSC.

This HSC Exam Preparation course offers a wonderful opportunity to hone examination skills in order to maximise chances of success.

This workshop will deal with identifying strategies for solving examination style questions from the Mathematics Extension 1 course. This will include reviewing relevant questions from past HSC examinations (previous Extension 1 course) as well as examination papers from other educational jurisdictions. Students will practise interpreting questions and planning responses. The presenter will provide valuable feedback and will also offer advice on examination technique and how to maximise exam results.

Students will have the opportunity to ask topic specific questions and to receive individual assistance and advice.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • answer a range of questions based on the Mathematics Extension 1 topics
  • critically evaluate your own and others' solutions to improve the quality of responses in assessment tasks
  • interpret mathematical language of examination questions to better understand the steps for a quality solutions
  • identify the relationships between key areas of mathematics
  • manage time effectively during examinations.

Content

The questions presented will be from the Mathematics Extension 1 HSC course.

The Mathematics Extension 1 HSC course consists of the following syllabus references:

  • ME-V1 (Preliminary course)
  • ME-P1 Proof of Mathematical Induction
  • ME-C2 Further Calculus Skills
  • ME-C3 Applications of Calculus
  • ME-S1 The Binomial Distribution
  • ME-T3 Trigonometric Equations

Intended audience

Year 12 students or accelerated Year 11 students who have already completed the previous topics.

Delivery style

Delivered as a two-day activity-based workshop where we will explore and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in a combination of lectures, tutorials and problem-solving sessions. Practice exercises are carefully graded and you will receive immediate feedback.

Materials

You will receive electronic copies using Dropbox of the following:

  • a course booklet including relevant theory and worked examples
  • examination and study advice and tips
  • relevant past examination questions from the previous Mathematics Extension 1 course, as well as from other educational jurisdictions, with sample answers.

Bring your own device

You are required to bring your own device (Windows or Mac) and a power cord. Please ensure your device is fully charged as access to power is limited.

Course evaluation

This course will be evaluated via an on-line student questionnaire.
