Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This course covers Integrated Chinese, Volume 2, Lessons 13(2) to 15, and is taught over ten weekly sessions of two hours per week.
Aims
This course aims to:
- introduce 118 vocabulary items
- cover more topics such as talking about birthday parties, asking directions and seeing a doctor
- concentrate on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
- expand your vocabulary and study more complex linguistic structures to enhance your confidence in communicating
- deepen your understanding of culture and society.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- discuss 118 vocabulary items and recognise around 130 Chinese characters
- employ words of directions, sense organs, simple diseases
- ask for and give directions in Chinese, and identify locations by using landmarks as references
- describe whether two places are close or far from one another
- ask someone to do something with you such as going to a party, hospital etc.
- give a simple description of a person's facial features
- offer someone a ride, and arrange a time and place to meet
- discuss birth dates and the Chinese zodiac sign
- describe basic symptoms of some common ailments such cold, fever, allergy and diarrhoea
- understand and repeat instructions on when and how often to take medication
- explain why you do or don't want to see the doctor.

- Direction and location words
- 刚 (gāng) vs 刚才 (gāngcái), adj. + 一点儿 (yì diǎnr)
- 那么 (nàme) indicating degree, 起来 (qǐ lái) indicating the beginning of an action, 把 (bǎ) construction, 死 (sǐ) indicating an extreme degree
- Verbal phrases and subject-predicate phrases used as attributives
- Time duration, times of actions, indicating an action in progress
- Reduplication of verbs
- 到 (dào) + place + 去 (qù) + action; sentences with 是…的 (shì...de)
- Adj / v + 是 (shì) + adj / v.+ 可是/但是… (kěshì/dànshì…)
- Comparative sentences with没(有) (méi{yǒu})
- 一…就… (yī...jiù...), 越来越… (yuè lái yuè...); 再说 (zàishuō), 又…又… (yòu…yòu…)
Intended audience
Suitable for A2 level students, those who have completed Chinese Mandarin 1031 or who have completed 100 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.
Delivery style
Delivered in the form of an interactive workshop where active participation is encouraged.
Prescribed text
Both simplified and traditional character versions of the textbook and the two workbooks are available, however the simplified version will be taught in the classroom. You can also opt for the electronic version of materials.

While the textbook is required, the workbook and character workbook are optional.
All textbooks are available in 3rd and 4th editions. If you already own a 3rd edition copy, you're welcome to use it. If not, please purchase the 4th edition.
Textbooks should only be purchased after confirmation is received from us. This usually occurs up to five days prior to commencement.
