Roman Marchant
Resume
Dr Roman Marchant is a senior lecturer in statistical machine learning. His current research at DARE (ARC Centre on Data Analytics for Resources and Environment) involves developing new data science techniques to answer complex problems, including prediction of world-wide fish biomass, inference for youth mental health and understanding social behaviour.
His area of expertise is decision-making under uncertainty, which he approaches by building fully probabilistic models and evaluating sequential decision-making processes, trading off exploitation and exploration of new knowledge to maximise long-term reward. This area of research, called Sequential Bayesian Optimisation (SBO), has been applied to environmental monitoring, predictive policing and currently scoping its potential applications for youth mental health and broader social science issues.
Roman has undertaken several projects developing data science models to understand real world problems and aiding policy decision making, including work with NSW Police to understand domestic violence and NSW Parliament on the effectiveness of lock-out laws in Sydney to curb alcohol related assaults.
Lately, Roman has been exploring the ethics of Artificial Intelligence, particularly around fairness, accountability, and transparency of automated decision-making systems. He is actively conducting research on causality through Bayesian networks and the benefits and risks of using these to inform decisions.

Norma Maroun. Tutor of CCEPamela Marsh
Resume
Dr Pamela Marsh is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Belief Formation Program of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD). She has led the development and testing of SoCog – a novel remediation program that targets the characteristic social impairments found in schizophrenia.
In 2006, Pamela completed her PhD on visual processing of emotional facial expressions in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and first-episode schizophrenia (FES) at the University of Sydney. She then joined the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS) to work on a project investigating the remediation of facial emotion perception in psychotic disorders.
Dr Marsh’s research achievements are unique because she is a mental health consumer and researcher with advocacy training; this is a rare combination and it is a major motivating factor in shaping Dr Marsh’s research interests. She is registered as a consumer representative (a spokesperson for people being treated for a mental illness) with the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW (SFNSW) and has worked in the Consumer Network in NSW.
Dr Marsh’s profile and reputation amongst consumers and clinicians makes her ideally placed to pursue her research aims to develop remediation programs that will help to alleviate the social functioning impairments in schizophrenia. While working on psychiatric wards as an advocate, she gained an invaluable and privileged insight into the everyday difficulties experienced by individuals with schizophrenia and the toll that this illness takes on individuals and their families. Working at a grass roots level in clinical settings prompted Dr Marsh to focus her research on designing and implementing theoretically-informed treatments to improve social functioning impairments that are not stigmatizing, are enjoyable and motivating, and can fit realistically into the everyday lives of people with schizophrenia.
